Minimises energy losses
The HelWin Beta HVDC Converter Platform (high-voltage direct current) was installed in the German part of the North Sea in a water depth of 23 metres. The 33kV alternating current offered by the wind turbines is converted to 320 kV direct current on the platform, with as effect, less energy loss along the way. The distance from the platform to the transformer station in Büttel is 130 kilometres which is where the connection to the electricity grid is located. The maximum capacity of HelWin beta is 680 MW, which is sufficient to provide approximately 750,000 households with energy. Iv-Offshore & Energy was responsible for the design of the topside and for the procurement of non-high-voltage equipment. Iv-Consult made the shop drawings for this project.
