What do you do as a lead engineer?
I work in the Building & Construction department of Iv-Bouw. As lead engineer I am responsible for coordinating the architectural and engineering aspects of construction projects. I am the go-between for architects, contractors and other parties involved in projects. I am also the assistant manager of the department and, when required, I stand in for the manager.
What has been your favourite project to date?
Iv-Bouw works across numerous sectors including healthcare, non-residential buildings and urban planning. One of the projects I worked on was an urban planning project called De Parade in Bergen op Zoom. This inner-city renewal project included ten new apartment complexes, including shops and car parks. The contract stipulated the creative incorporation of the character of the old properties into the new buildings. This required smart architecture with a lot of detailing. From an engineering point of view it gave us a unique challenge to turn our design into makeable solutions.
What was your role in the project?
I began as a draughtsman in the first phase of the project. Shortly afterwards I became a lead engineer and coordinated the work of five or six people. During this part of the project I learned a great deal because I had direct contacts with the building contractor and obtained an in-depth insight into how projects of this kind are carried out.
Why did you decide to sit on the Works Council?
I consider it important to make this kind of personal contribution. It also allows me to keep abreast of developments in strategy and internal business operations. Our organisation takes the Works Council very seriously. It is always informed properly about matters of concern. So we are an effective sounding board for the company's directors and they certainly appreciate this role of the Works Council.
