Mammoet will put two new super heavy lift cranes into service in 2011. These new generation cranes have a reach of more than 200 metres and a load moment three to four times higher than the present generation of cranes. Mammoet is responsible for the design and Iv-Consult for most of the engineering.
The cranes will be used for such purposes as petrochemical installations, civil engineering and offshore industry. The cranes reflect the current trend of prefab construction. The load's size is just as important as its weight. The need to reach across existing structures has created a demand for cranes capable of lifting large loads over large distances (called a flight). The maximum load moment (load multiplied by flight) is 120,000 ton metres and 160,000 ton metres respectively for the two cranes.
An additional requirement is that is must be possible for the crane to be built from sections that meet the size and weight conditions for a standard shipping container. This makes them easy to transport (about 200 containers per crane), even in regions with poor infrastructure.
The end-result is not just an enormous crane, but above all a complex structure.
