This system is used to lay pipelines on the sea bottom at great depths.
The J-Lay tower allows the laying of flexible and steel pipes at depths of more than 3000 metres. A loader lifts individual pipe sections from the deck and positions them upright. The J-Lay module then takes over the pipe and welds it to the pipeline being created. With this system, the pipe lowered to the sea bottom assumes a 'J' shape, which explains the name of the system. J-Lay is an extremely pipe-friendly way of laying pipes because they are bent hardly at all. It is why the system is frequently used for fatigue-sensitive applications like the risers that interconnect a production platform and the pipes on the sea bottom.
Iv-Consult produced the calculations for part of the steel structure and the workshop drawings for Huisman Itrec.
