Vibrodens mandrel
Vibrodens mandrel

A large number of gas pipes have to be laid on the sea bottom for the offshore gas industry. Without proper ballasting, these pipes would rise to the surface. That is why they are usually coated with high- density concrete filled with iron ore. The traditional coating process is laborious and sometimes dangerous, requiring many workers for each pipe. The Vibrodens® process was developed in the early 1990s to reduce labour and increase the quality of the product. The coating process was further automated by positioning the pipes vertically and pouring concrete around a pipe using a slip form. The density of the concrete is increased by vibrators on the slip form. After having been in service successfully for several years, our client TKPS bought the machine. On account of its extensive experience of crane technology and machinery Iv-Consult was asked to analyse the machine and consult on an improved design.

In addition to a conceptual design of the entire machine, Iv-Consult produced the final design of the rotating mandrel device.
