To improve the operational safety of its Walrus class submarines, the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) of the Royal Netherlands Navy has decided to develop a highly detailed stability model by using PIAS (stability software). This model will enable DMO to perform several safety studies and to equip their submarines with the loading computer software LocoPIAS. Because a submarine does not have a typical ship hull form and the watertight compartmentisation is highly complex, modelling the boat directly into PIAS would be very laborious.
Nevesbu has modelled the submarine and all its compartments within Rhinoceros and developed programs to export the data from the model to an XML file which can be read directly into PIAS. In this way the model is providing insight, easy to be controlled and to maintained by DMO.
It is also possible with these programs to export other ship hulls and compartmentisation easily from Rhinoceros into PIAS
