The first storm surge barrier to be completed as part of the Delta Plan, implemented subsequent to the floods of 1953, is located close to Krimpen aan den IJssel. The lifting steel gates appear to be most reminiscent of an arch bridge lying on its side.
However, steel cables are attached to hoisting points located at the two extremities of the gate. The other ends of these cables are linked to counterweights; the cables are guided over pulleys driven by a hoisting installation.
