Turn over machine
Turn over machine

To expand container handling facilities in the Netherlands, the Dutch Government plans to build a container terminal in the Western Scheldt estuary called the Westerschelde Container Terminal (WCT).

The WCT will be built in the water of the Western Scheldt. The first step will be the laying of 83 huge L-shaped retaining wall sections at the bottom of the estuary. The volume between the walls will then be filled with sand to allow construction of the harbour facilities.

Dutch civil engineering group WCT was engaged to build the retaining walls. Iv-Consult designed a Turn Over Machine for the WCT group to make this possible.

The Turn Over Machine, an L-shaped steel structure, accommodates the concrete L-shaped wall. The machine is turned by means of a multiple winching system. A critical part is the curved transition piece between the vertical and horizontal parts, which is activated during the rotating of the machine.
