To control the ever-changing water levels in the Venetian Bay, Laguna Venizia, the Italian government decided to close the three gaps in the coastline by means of barriers. To keep Venice accessible for cruise ships and the nearby refinery for oil tankers, a shipping lock was included in the plans. The preliminary design is based on a lock with a length of 350 m, a width of 53 m and a depth of 17 m. The shipping lock will have doors, which slide on a smooth threshold using a film of water.
