Allseas converted the bulk carrier Geeview to a sophisticated pipe-laying vessel called Audacia (Latin for 'audacious', meaning heroic and unafraid). Audacia is 225 metres long (excluding stinger) and 32 metres wide.
Iv-Consult was responsible for the detailed engineering for the stinger, which included three different sections, and was contracted by Mercon Steel Structures of Gorinchem. With a total weight of 770 tonnes and a length of approximately 106 metres, Audacia can lay pipelines with diameters of up to 44 inches and can operate in water depths up to 3000 metres.
In contrast with conventional pipe-laying vessels, the stinger, a long protruding beam that guides the pipeline to the sea bottom, is on the bow instead of the stern, enabling Audacia to reach speeds of up to 16 knots.
