At the time of its construction the London Eye was the world's largest Ferris wheel, standing in the heart of the British capital on the banks of the River Thames opposite Big Ben.
It was erected to commemorate the 20th century and the dawning of the second millennium. It was the contribution of sponsor British Airways to the festivities surrounding the new millennium. The London Eye is shaped like a bicycle wheel. The structure looks very transparent thanks to 'spokes' made of cables. Matters such as dynamics, fatigue and stability played an essential role in the design of this landmark structure.
The wheel has 32 glass capsules ('gondolas') each seating 25 people. A total of 800 people can simultaneously enjoy the spectacular views over London.
Only one year was available to complete the project from design to commissioning. Iv-Consult provided the structural design and assembly calculations for this exceptional steel structure.
